We’re Bookmark Reading Charity, a children’s literacy charity with a simple vision: we want every child to read. We partner with schools in the UK’s most disadvantaged areas to build a love of reading and give children the skills they need for a fair chance in life, through our flexible, volunteer-led reading programme.

Why does it matter?

Reading isn’t just about books. It’s being able to read a road sign, a birthday card or a job application. In England, 7.1 million adults struggle to read, making many aspects of life much harder.

What is the One-to-one Reading Programme?

As a volunteer, you’ll spend just one hour a week, online or face-to-face, reading and playing literacy games with a child who is at risk of falling behind. No teaching experience is needed – we provide all training and resources.
