Volunteer onboarding process – what to expect

We’re excited you’re interested in volunteering with us! Below is a general overview of the steps you’ll go through as part of our onboarding process. Each step helps ensure you’re ready and equipped to support children in their reading journey.

1. Register online and complete Your application

Start by filling out our online registration form. This includes basic details about you, your motivations for volunteering and your availability.

2. Provide referee details

As part of our safeguarding process, we ask you to supply the contact information for two referees. We’ll get in touch with them directly to request a reference on your behalf. If we need anything additional, we’ll let you know.

3. Book your interview

Next, if your application is successful, you’ll be invited to book a short video interview (about 20 minutes). This is a great opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to ask any questions you might have. We’ll talk about why you want to volunteer and go over what the programme involves.

4. Employment, volunteering and education history

In line with our Safer Recruitment policy, we ask for details of any employment, education, or volunteering roles you’ve had in the past 5 years. Please explain any gaps of three months or more during this time.

5. Criminal Record Check (DBS)

You’ll need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which is free of charge through our trusted provider. You’ll receive an email invite to complete this online. Once done, you’ll also be asked to complete a digital ID verification.

Important: This route is only available if you have both a valid passport andUK driving license. If not, let us know and we’ll provide an alternative option.

Already have a DBS certificate?
If it’s Enhanced, for the Child Workforce, and registered on the Update Service, you may not need a new check. Please email us a photo of your certificate for verification.

6. Overseas background checks

If you’ve lived outside the UK for 12 or more consecutive months in the past five years, you’ll need to complete an overseas criminal record check. This is a standard part of safeguarding. We can guide you through this process, including links and support. While some checks may have a cost, we ask if you’re able to cover it yourself to help us keep admin costs low.

7. Complete online training

You’ll receive a separate email to complete your online training. This covers programme basics, safeguarding, and your role as a volunteer. The training takes around two hours and works best on a PC/laptop using Google Chrome. You’re also welcome to explore additional resources and policies for further learning.

8. Programme type and location

If you’ve signed up for both online and in-person volunteering, please note we may not have face-to-face schools in your area yet. We’ll reach out to confirm your options and see if you’re happy to proceed with just the online programme for now.

We’re here to help every step of the way, so if you have any questions or need help with any part of the process, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We can’t wait to welcome you as a volunteer and support you as you help children discover the joy of reading!
