1:1 volunteer-led reading intervention for primary schools

discover Bookmark Reading Charity’s reading programme for KS1 and KS2

Our volunteer-led reading programme offers support for children in Years 1 to 5 who are at risk of not meeting the expected standard for reading.

Our programmes provide one-to-one reading sessions for 30 minutes either once or twice a week. Children receive one-to-one reading support from a trained volunteer. These sessions take place online through our secure, interactive platform. Face-to-face sessions are optional.

To make this support available to as many children as possible, we offer our programmes at a cost of just £1 per session - that’s £12 for a full programme.

The benefits to your pupils

Our programmes are evidence-based and evaluated by the National Literacy Trust. Sessions are clearly structured with varied and engaging content, including a range of books, games, and activities. Struggling readers are encouraged to choose what they want to read.

  • 92% of children who were reading below the expected standard at the beginning of their programme ended the year at or above the expected standard

  • 92% of teachers noticed that children who did the programme enjoyed reading more as a result

  • 88% of teachers saw an increase in reading confidence in children participating

Parent pledge

In line with the Government’s School’s White Paper, we can help with your school’s Parent Pledge for children that are falling behind. Many of our partner schools often use part of their pupil premium budget to fund Bookmark reading programmes.

Don’t just take our word for it

Watch these videos from children and teachers to hear how our reading intervention is impactful, low cost and low admin.

“Our pupils can never usually sit and read for half an hour and enjoy it, they get distracted and disinterested, but on Bookmark’s online programme the children are so engaged and don't want to log off!"
