Frequently asked questions

What does a reading volunteer do?
A reading volunteer spends 30 minutes twice a week helping a child with their reading. Using our library of books, games and structured activities, children can build their reading fluency and gain confidence, with personalised one-to-one support.

Am I a Bookmark volunteer, a reading mentor or a corporate volunteer?
If you’re 14 – 18 years old and have been advised by your school or sixth form to apply, you’re a reading mentor. If you have been directed to volunteer with Bookmark through your workplace, and your employer has a partnership with us, you’re a corporate volunteer. Otherwise, you are a Bookmark volunteer.

What safeguarding is in place?
The safety of children and volunteers is our top priority. Bookmark has strict safeguarding policies, including safer recruitment practices. You can read our full Safeguarding, Policies & Procedures online.

We don’t have general packs that we give out but we do have our Community Fundraising Guide which has lots of information and advice in. Discover more on our fundraising page.
