Designed to help primary schools build a thriving reading culture, our Rocket Packs are part of our range of school reading resources, helping more children discover the joy of reading for pleasure

Each Rocket Pack includes a carefully selected collection of high-quality, diverse children’s books, paired with an Inspiration Pack featuring assemblies, classroom activities and a whole-school reading challenge. Together, they create exciting reading experiences that inspire curiosity, conversation and a lifelong love of reading

This term’s Stories to Save the Planet Rocket Pack has been curated by author Felicity Yeoh, creator of The Kingdom of Tigers. Filled with stories, poems and non-fiction inspired by the natural world, the collection celebrates wildlife, habitats and the people working to protect them.

From rainforests and oceans to endangered animals and environmental heroes, these books encourage children to explore the wonders of our planet while discovering how small actions can make a big difference.

A message from Felicity Yeoh

Hello to Bookmark and your readers! It was a real joy to curate an environmental-themed Rocket Pack this summer. My children and friends made brilliant recommendations and helped me edit a very long list down to the final selection!’

Felicity’s own writing is deeply inspired by the connection between people and nature.

Her acclaimed novel, The Kingdom of Tigers, encourages young readers to think about conservation, empathy and the importance of protecting vulnerable species.

For Felicity, environmental stories offer something unique. They combine adventure, imagination and real-world issues, helping children develop a deeper connection with wildlife and the world around them.

Whether readers are following a lost rhino across the savannah, uncovering secrets beneath the waves or exploring hidden forests filled with wonder, books have the power to transport children to new places while helping them better understand the challenges facing our planet.

Felicity explains:

There are so many fascinating and important animals, plants and habitats on Earth, and they’re all connected. Environmental stories enable us to put ourselves in someone else’s place, maybe an animal or person directly affected by climate change, deforestation or carbon emissions. We don’t just see these issues – we feel why it’s so important to be good stewards of our one precious planet.’

Environmental stories that inspire action and hope

This Rocket Pack brings together a rich mix of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, giving children different ways to engage with environmental themes.

The books explore conservation, biodiversity, community action and climate awareness, while also celebrating resilience, imagination and hope. They show that protecting our planet is not only about saving wildlife, but also about caring for people, places and each other.

By exploring these themes through stories, children can build knowledge, empathy and confidence, while enjoying some truly unforgettable reads.

Why reading for pleasure matters

Stories have an incredible ability to build empathy.

Through books, children can experience the world through someone else’s eyes, whether that’s a whale navigating polluted oceans, a tiger searching for a safe habitat or a young person determined to protect their local environment.

Research consistently shows that reading for pleasure supports children’s wellbeing, confidence, creativity and understanding of the world around them. When children find books that spark their interests, they’re more likely to develop positive reading habits that last a lifetime.

That’s why Rocket Packs are designed to connect children with books they’ll genuinely enjoy. By combining engaging stories with meaningful themes, Stories to Save the Planet helps children discover the pleasure of reading while encouraging them to think more deeply about the world they share.

As Felicity puts it:

Books are pure magic. They can teleport you, let you travel through time and help you become someone else, even a tiger! You can travel the world from the comfiest chair in the classroom.’

A journey around the world

We hope every child will find something to love within this collection.

Felicity said: I hope you really enjoy these stories and that there’s something for everyone. I loved reading them and felt like I’d travelled all over the world, discovering incredible places and seeing wonderful things.’

With stories full of adventure, discovery and hope, this Rocket Pack invites children to explore the natural world, develop a love of reading and imagine the role they can play in creating a brighter future for our planet.

The conservation theme also connects with the upcoming issue of The Story Corner magazine, giving children even more opportunities to engage with environmental stories, wildlife and the wonders of the natural world through reading for pleasure.
